This group represents internationally renowned composer and guitarist José Luis Merlín’s first project exclusively dedicated to traditional “foklore argentino,” the rhythmic folk-dance music from the countryside of the Argentinean gauchos. josé luis’s own compositions have been recorded by guitarists from five continents, such as David Tennenbaum, Antigoni Goni, and Jason Vieux, to name a few, and his performances have been heard from the centro cultural de la villa in Madrid, to the united nations in New York. this new project presents a return to the roots of his music and a collaboration with the lineage of his family of musicians. The quartet originally formed in madrid with josé luis’s sons david and sebastián merlín and josé luis’s protégé, brian baumbusch, and performed their first u.s. tour in the spring of 2010 with latin percussionist aaron shafer-haiss and solange merdinian, an argentinean opera singer and graduate of Julliard. they kicked off their tour with a concert at the Gala Theatre in Washington, D.C., and performed around the east coast, sponsored by the Argentine embassy and New York consulate. The quartet’s mission is to revive forgotten and anonymous folk songs and dances and promote the repertoire of the important mavericks of last centuries folk culture, such as Atahualpa Yupanqui, Sixto Palavecino, Andrés Chazarreta, etc… we hope you enjoy the music.
